* inspire me

Look what I’ve found, an inflight magazine of Vueling airlines . It’s called LING. Here are some pages from it that I’ve used for an inspiration, but I think I’ll be in the need for more.

Of course there are some things that I don’t like. Some mistakes that I’ve done before and have been doing still. It’s the everything lying like a “patato” thing. You certainly now what I mean.

and here they went a little experimental with coloumns.

but also they have this funny page about Istanbul!

I’ve been thinking for a while about my layout design and about some topics I would like to include in my inflight magazine “Panorama”. I’ve decided to design a travel section, another section about the city’s agenda and another one about international music  festivals that we’ll be talking about in this summer. I’m not totally sure whether my way of designing might be the right one or not (if there are true’s and false’s in design), but I can say that I generally began with the images. Since we are free to form our own content, it might be better to think of the visuals we have in the first place. Here are some key images that led my layout to have its own shape:

Actually these two b&w images were larger, somehow I wanted them to be smaller and closer to each other, because I wanted to show the group members as if they were changing all of a sudden  their positions.

Another image that I like is from Tomorrowlandfestival in Belgium. Isn’t that a some kind of god-like power that the DJ gets from the crowd?

Hi everyone!

It’s been some time that I could not make any posts, now it’s time to keep on blogging. During this semester we’ll be focusing on layout design. I’ll be designing an in-flight magazine for my imaginary airlines corporate “Zeplin“. My posts will contain lots of images, that I have found and also consider to include in my magazine. In order to make a good layout design, the first thing we need to have is a grid. You may ask the importance of the grid. Well, it should based on a smallest unit. That’s comprehensible. With the help of the units, you would achieve to flexibility.

This is my grid, where I’ll built my pages upon.

As we have a couple of days left  to the new year, it’s time of the madness for calendars and so called for weekly diary notebooks. If you miss to get a new one before the new year, this might cause a crisis in your life. I don’t mean that the first days of the new year would be like a mess if you don’t get your weekly diary and write immediately in it. No that’s not what I say. What I say is, that you might have a terrible year in front of you, if you couldn’t find your right agenda book. True story, at least in my case it was like that. Actually once, we  -a close friend of mine and me- weren’t able to find our favorite weekly planner in the first or second week of January. So we decided to have another brand- what could be the harm in that- actually we had more color options. I had dark blue and Serra had a green one. We were a little bit upset, but we were enough optimistic to hope for a  calm happy year. The size was similar to our old ones, but thinner. (actually this sounds like a plus but sometimes you dream of your plans and future so willingly, that you want to feel its presence in your hand. And honestly, I wasn’t feeling that but at the same time I was (maybe both we were) so  obsessed to admit it. I’ve talked a lot, the point I want to make is that calendars and weekly planners have a strange impact upon us. I’m not sure about other people, if they gaze on calendars for like an hour or so like me-.  That’s not always like that for sure, but if there is a certain date on that I have something  I care (an appointment, an interview , a meeting with a friend, etc.) that’s it! I spend hours for planning it. Visualizing it in my mind, but also on the paper with some color. Maybe I’m too afraid to forget. What they say- a  fish has a capability of forgetting anything.

..by the way, I still didn’t get my new one and I’m afraid to death. I should not let this year to turn into nightmare-

Anyways let’s make our eyes happy a little bit.

*Greeting card designs

It’s hard to believe that two weeks of the December have almost passed. Although the weather doesn’t collaborate with us to get used the idea of winter, it’s time to admit that the winter is at our doorstep. What I’m really longing for is the snow.  The snow brings along the new year. (at least in my head) For the new year,  let’s get inspired with some smart greeting card designs..

After we mentioned in the last week’s photography class,what I intended to show was at first the  photographer Amit Sha’al’s project “Altneuland”  , but then today I’ve come across internet based project called “Dear Photograph”. So, I’ve decided to combine them, since they have a similar approach to photography.

In “Altneuland”, black and white photographs from 1926 to 1979 of the city Palestine were collected. They were held in front of the camera and another photograph was taken, this time in the year 2010. Placing the old photograph of the same space in to the new one, reflects  ” the time that has passed between capturing both photos” . I liked the idea very much, and would have like  to try it with the all old photographs of my family if I could had a chance to find all the places they have been to.

And these ones are from the internet based project “Dear photograph”:

* A guide for street vendors

In New York  street vendors are kind of luckier than other ones around the world, because Candy Chang, Rosten Woo,  John Mangin and Sean Basinski made a collaboration  in order to ensure them to survive and go on with their jobs on the streets, which is vending.  According to Chang, the major problem before was the book, which contains regulation laws,  incomprehensible for anyone especially for foreigners who live on by selling things  to people on the streets. If  they would be told properly how they should set up their stand, they would not have to pay for penalties which caused by lack of informing. Illustrations were made by Chang and the way she combined the useful information and diagrams is really remarkable. I don’t know if a similar guide exists in Turkey or not, but I highly believe its necessity for the convenience of our vendors especially in Istanbul. I think, unfortunately,  a smaller guide might be necessary not for vendors, but for pubs and cafes in Beyoğlu in order to clarify misconceptions and unanswered questions about organizing the public sphere. But in order to do that, the municipality should once make a collaboration with urban planners and also with the owners of workplaces how to make a “proper” organization rather than picking tables and chairs in one night. Poor tables.

In case you might want to download a PDF version.

Here you might get more information of the project.

* colors everywhere

I wanted to share a video that I’ve been watching for almost three days now. It became so that I’ve begun to see painting going over the pavement as I walk on the street. Actually the world could have been better that way. The artist of the pieces is Holton Rower. It reminded me Pollock as he pours the painting continuously from above, but the variety of the color attracts me differently. Anyway, I think you might want to see the video:
